Leather

Leather restoration as another aspect of what she can do because she absolutely loves animals. A hide of leather can only come from those which are processed for food. Just as though we do in life we should cherish those who provide us with resources. Kristin believes that leather should be well cared for just like your own skin. Since it’s no longer alive it’s important to keep it clean and hydrated. Over time finishes wear off and need to be reapplied. If neglected leather will wrinkle, dry out and split. The initial investment is quite a bit more then most other materials so why not take consistent care of them?

Vinyl/Plastic & Leather Cleaner easily cleans vinyl upholstery, leather, rubber, enamel, ceramics and chrome applications. Not only does it clean, but also provides a protective film for vinyl auto tops and upholstery.

Leather Cleaner II is a mild water-based solution gently and effectively cleans leather surfaces from common household stains. It is pH balanced for leather and formulated for enhanced leather cleaning capabilities. Safe fro all top coated and aniline type leathers. Not recommended for use on unfinished leathers like suede or unbuckle.

Leather Proector is a highly advanced product designed to assist leather in repelling water, oil, and alcohol based satins. It is perfectly suited for natural grained leathers because is doesn’t change the feel or the color of even these sensitive leathers while adding stain resistance. For topcoated leathers, the application of Leather Protector will ease the removal of difficult stains like ink, lipstick, mustard, newspaper print, and blue jean transfer. Leather Protector forms a transparent, breathable barrier that will improve stain resistance and efficiency of cleaning.

Pull-Up Revive, over time, the pull-up effect applied by tanneries will diminish with use. Surface scratches can arise, and color in high use areas can lighten. Pull-Up Revive is a specialty product designed to help restore leathers that have a pull-up surface treatment. It contains the same type of formulation applied at the tannery by machine.

To create this dynamic look a dark pigment is sprayed over a lighter color and it’s not uncommon for the darker top layer of pigment to wear off the lighter dye.

Semi-Aniline Leather Chair Restoration

This chair is apart of a set of leather furniture which this piece sat in a window with direct afternoon sun light.  After a number of years the bleaching of the sun left an outline of the window on the inner arm.  Leather was cleaned and new color was applied in layers.  First a lighter under tone then a darker overlay is applied to give the leather depth of color and a clear top coat finishes off the piece.

Hand painted Pigment Deer hide Leather Purse

Picture
A deer hide was handed down from grandfather, mother to son.  The exterior of the purse was originally tanned raw.  Due to the stretch and color of the leather, a finish was applied by airbrushing the background and hand painting the maple leafs.  The maple leaves are a design from the mother's favorite inlay design by her son, which can be seen on a McPherson guitar.  The deer hide is lined with leather from The Hide and Leather House and the pocket is lined with the deer hide.

Kristin Ottesen was given this purse by her sister who on visiting home from France, she had had it in storage for some time  before given it up due to its wear and couldn't justify bring it oversea.  Stitching was coming out in several places around the straps and was worn down to the raw leather in areas.  It was cleaned, reconditioned, redyed throughout, and given a protective finish.  Kristin thrilled her sister by returning it to her almost like new on a visit to France.

Years of neglect left these pull-up leather seats dry and faded.  Two days of cleaning and working the oil and waxes back into the seats brought back so much color and life to match the repair needed on the driver's seat outer bolster.

Pull-up Leather replaced with a Pigmented Leather

If leather isn't kept clean it deteriorates and falls apart.  Regular cleaning and restoration can lengthen the life greatly.  There are many different types of leathers which need different care.
